Today Insteon announced the creation and availability of a Mayhem plug-in. What is Mayhem you ask? Mayhem is a free, open source system that allows you to quickly and easily connect your devices. Mayhem is currently in developer preview.
Originally developed by the Microsoft Applied Sciences group, the idea is pretty simply. You select from a list of software or hardware events (hardware events include voice recognition, Xbox controller, Phidget module) and then choose from a list of software or hardware reactions. A reaction also includes running a program which of course makes reactions pretty much unlimited.
In the case of Insteon, you first register the Insteon device by holding the set button and adding the device's on/off as an event. You now simply select a reaction.
We tried it out ourselves and found it very quick and easy to setup. In our little test, we used a PowerLinc USB and registered an Insteon wireless door and window sensor within Mayhem. We created two events, a "on" event and a "off" event for our sensor. When the sensor sent a "on" signal the reaction was to open a URL, http://www.automatedliving.ca. When the sensor sent a "off" signal the reaction was to lock the PC.
We were pleasantly surprised by how fast the reaction was triggered to the event, it's almost instant.
